Look in the toy section, usually, or Halloween section of Dollar Tree for head bands with long shiny hair on them. It's a bit of a mystery what colors you'll find but the price can't be beat. I'm guessing it's cheap nylon.
Get at least 2 for a 1/6 scale doll or Monster High, always better to have too much and too long. Carefully snip the hair off the headband, put a band around it to make a ponytail, trim it to an even hank.
