I've Come to a Conclusion About Barbie Dishes . . .

. . . and that conclusion is that finding more than 2 matching plates is a PAIN IN THE NECK. Finding 4 is a miracle, but a full service of 8 is an impossibility.

Seriously, the current canon from Mattel states that there are four Roberts sisters, Barbie, Skipper, Stacie, and Chelsea. However, food and dishes only come in sets of two (with a playset). Most kids have more than two Barbies, so what are those dolls supposed to do for dinner? Wait until the other dolls are done and have washed their dishes to have something to eat off of? Or is this stuff for when Barbie shoos everyone out of the house for date night with Ken/Blaine/whoever Mattel says she's dating at the time? I can't be be the only one who'd snap up a proper, full set of 1:6 scale dishes if I had the chance.

Sorry for the mini rant. I'm trying to put together a set of dishes for my doll crew (a set being dinner plates, salad plates, bowls, and cups), and considering there are a minimum of 10 of them who are canonically living in the same house, two plates won't cut it. It doesn't help that the cook of the crew is mad at me because not only is he still waiting for his reroot and faceup, but I'm dragging my feet finding him proper kitchen appliances and dishes . . . (Sorry, Seth . . . I promise I'll have your kitchen set up some day . . .)

I've decided the best solution to the problem is to just buy of lots/bundles of Barbie dishes and pots on eBay, pick out what I want, and spray paint them all the same color, then bundle up what I don't want and donate it to Goodwill. (Some kid would probably be very excited. Or maybe even some adult. I know I'd be happy to find a ziplock of Barbie dishes at Goodwill.)

Anybody happen to have any resources for 1:6 scale dishes before I pull my hair out sorting hundreds of tiny plates?

You're right!!! :)

In the 1980s, I collected the 'Sweet Roses' furniture and had all the sets (still have them, but stored away) including the dining room, which had a setting of 4:

the kitchen (pots and pans):

the curio cabinet (4 plates and more):

Maybe you could buy 2 dining sets and 1 wall unit/curio and get enough plates and almost enough chairs for your crew?

I'm not too worried about chairs, since I'll probably make all my chairs and dining room table to accommodate my Integrity Toys guys. (They're an inch taller than Ken O-O; By comparison, my planned 23 cm Obitsu girl is so itty bitty! But her character is only 4'8", so it'll work proportionally, but she'll be so small!) I'll definitely look into the Sweet Roses sets. I have some Gloria brand dishes (bought them mainly for the silverware), but I really dislike the shape of the plates. They're more like large salad bowls than plates . . .

Seth says he'll be lenient with the dishes for now. Not like he can cook anything to put on them without appliances. So to eBay searching for a Kitchen Littles refrigerator and stove I go . . . At least if they're too ridiculously short for him proportionally, I can build a platform for them to sit on.

The fact that Mattel never released a set of dishes for Barbie dolls still bothers me. They made so many cool sets of stuff back in the day, I would have thought making a set of dishes (especially if they were packaged like full sized ones just for the cool factor) would have been obvious. Then again, I often question Mattel's thought process. (Who else remembers Oreo Barbie and Mattel's claims about not knowing what "Oreo" was slang for, or the Teen Talk Barbie fiasco?)

To be fair, I had no idea what Oreo was slang for, either. I had to Google it just now. I always thought it was just a cookie. ^^;

Matching dishes in the dollhouse? Barbie brand? If money isn't much of a problem you can start a "plastic crack" Re Ment addiction but you'll still have to buy a few boxes to get enough matching settings.

On the cheaper end I'd think the Gloria brand would have stuff. Check the dollhouse section at Hobby Lobby, check the 18 inch doll section at Target for the smaller Lori dolls and mini flocked animals.

Japanese dollhouse books have a lot of DIY.

I've got a couple sets of the Gloria dishes, but I don't like the shape of the plates. I think I'll turn them into fancy, big salad bowls, like we serve entree salads in at work.

We don't have a Target that's a feasible drive from my home, but I'm pretty sure I could get the Lori sets online, and our local Walmart has a line of mini dolls with a cooking set that has some stuff I'd like to add to the dollhouse kitchen. Also . . .

The Gloria dishes work fine for me. You just need to paint them. Kitchen Little from Mattel has a set of nice dishes too.
