I needle and thread reroot so that adds time but it is worth it. If you don't mind the work you might find a doll/head you've been wanting cheap because it has a bad hair cut or needs some TLC.

And if you get in to it there's money in rerooting services.

I was watching rerooting videos last night and it looks interesting. I think I might try it one day whenever I acquire a head that I want to tear all the hair out of! Lol... It just seems so brutal.

Get a junk store Barbie to practice with. It's one of those things where you concentrate on the finished project and tell the doll 'pain is beauty'. The right color can transform a doll.

For hair, aside from online sources, I've used headbands I found at Dollar Tree with long shiny stuff on them, synthetic wigs found wherever, and JoAnn has long blonde "natural hair" that is incredibly soft. Hobby Lobby has been hit or miss.

I bought some hair a while back to make a wig out of (which was a disaster!) and I still have a ton left.
I think it's this stuff:

That should work, right?

Yes, it should work. I use 10 strands for each plug. :D
