It's similar to the Yoshida book, you really don't need both. There's no real step by step pictures in this book. If you can get the hang of what's going on or really can't find/afford the Yoshida book this is a decent substitute. It does have some different approaches than the Yoshida book, and gets exact with what size stuff like joint balls. Looks like they include a full size "pattern" that is a life size photo of the finished doll. But like the Yoshida book it doesn't cover body joints.

I really do have to push the Learning to Be a Doll Artist book by Martha Armstrong-Hand, to my knowledge it's being reprinted, and using it along with the above book or the Yoshida one. The Doll Artist book covers all the joint mechanics, including body ones, neither Japanese book does.

Pop Sculpture http://www.amazon.com/Pop-Sculpture-Fig ... 738&sr=8-1 Designing, sculpting, molding, casting, painting from people who really really know what they're doing. Working with plastics, resins, and other modern materials.

Thanks DollyKim !!! Your recommendation led me to this book. 8-)

My copy of Pop Sculpture arrived today (21Apr2011), and it really is very, very good !!!
Pop Sculpture is a book about modeling in clay over an armature, making molds, casting
wax into the molds, finishing the wax sculpt, molding it, then casting in resin. Even though
the emphasis is on figurines and statuettes, it has the information about silicone rubber molding
and resin casting that the other BJD-making books do not have. I am very happy to add this
book to my doll-making reference library!!! :D

Yoshida Style Ball Jointed Doll Making Guide is very good for making an OOAK BJD of air-dry clay.
It does not cover mold making of any kind. However, it is an incredible BJD-making tutorial !!! :D

Learning To Be A Doll Artist by Martha Armstrong-Hand is all about making a porcelain BJD
with ball joints. It covers every aspect of making a doll, from concept drawings, to modeling the doll
in oil-clay over a wire armature, to making plaster rough shell molds which are used to make carving
wax patterns, which in turn are used to design the joints, and refine the parts. Those refined parts
are then used to make slip casting molds for casting porcelain slip. She covers firing the doll, china
painting, designing the tensioning, assembly of the doll, making clothing, making wigs, making shoes,
and displaying the finished multi-media work-of-art. LTBADA does not cover silicone rubber molding,
or resin casting. Hopefully, it will be reprinted again. It is a classic BJD-making book, and should
not be out-of-print, as it currently is. :D

To my knowledge Amazon is taking pre orders on the Doll Artist book, I wish it would be updated too but it's still one of the best out there.

The book is supposed to be reprinted by Reverie Publishing.
http://www.reveriepublishing.com/item.php?id=719
Currently, Reverie Publishing has the rights to LTBADA.
If Reverie Publishing does not reprint the book, Amazon.Com cannot ship it.

They put up their web page for the book, back in October 2010,
and the web page said the book would be available in January 2011.
After January 2011 cam and went, they changed the web page to
say that the book was scheduled to be reprinted in March 2011.
After March 2011 came and went, the web page was changed to say
it was scheduled to be reprinted in Summer 2011. Summer is a 3-month
chunk of the year. If Reveries does not reprint the book, then Amazon.Com
will have to change the date on their web page for it as well.

The alternative to having a copy of LTBADA is the thread at Enchanted:

Long story short this may be a better book than the Yoshida one, comes with diagrams that make it much easier to make your doll just like the one in the book, great idea for those getting started with this. Has some "greener" methods than the other ways. If you have other books this one will add to your knowledge.
