Threads magazine has started a series of videos to help people learn to sew. They start with the very basics, with entries like "How a stitch is made" and "Fabric 101"

A pity Serphim Grace charges as much for her other download books as she does for the print versions - I can buy a lot of japanese pattern books for that - and those have pictures of what you are making. I bought her Orient Doll So-type book. lots of patterns sure - not one picture of what they are supposed to look like after you sew them - something I, for some strange reason, like to be able to see. :(

I remember her writing about why her costs are so high. I think it has to do with lulu's pricing structure.
I really wish she had better pictures as well. I'm not likely to invest in patterns that I don't have a good finished photo of.
Her beginner's sewing looked pretty good though. It's been so long since I've been a beginner and I learned to sew in such a hodge podge fashion, that I can't tell how relevant her manuals are for beginning sewers. The first one is free though, so people can easily make up their own minds about how useful the manual would be.
