NaNoWriMo and AI - AN UPDATE

The place for those OT discussions that you just HAVE to share in a doll themed forum.

Well this is disappointing. I enjoyed taking part in the challenge even if I never met the goal. And I enjoyed the in-person (and virtual) writing meets we had during the month, too. My local Nano writer’s group was talking about making it just a standard writing group but nothing has actually been done for it. It’s been months of silence and everyone has gone awol.

A lot of people are getting tired of their nice things being ruined and are starting to fight back. I'm already sick of kids on the internet way younger than me trying to tell me who I should or shouldn't read because the author farted once.

If I wanted eyes and feedback on my writing, or at least the stories that would qualify for it, I'd join Archive of Our Own. They apparently have a good feedback system going on. Otherwise I just post my plot bunnies and WIP on my blog or if it's a longer piece I put a pdf somewhere and link to it. At least I get to see how many people like and reblog and can estimate X amount more at least saw it.

AO3 is surprisingly wholesome, considering it's kind of known for erotica. The people who leave feedback there are usually genuinely nice. Maybe it's because it's an invite only website and trolls aren't willing to wait for their approval to come through.

I've heard it's nice, right now navigating a new site with it's own rules isn't going to easily compute, and I literally do not know what I want to do with my story telling.

Also I just went thru a major session of rereading and wanting to rework several pieces, especially my longest one. Several things in it were no longer going to work and I wanted to do better by a character.

I do hope that professed reporter in the Reddit post does do some poking around.

If you decide to join, let me know. I think I can invite you directly so you don't have to wait for the random approval to come through.

I'm sorry, but saying that not stopping people from using AI to do all the work for them is "ablist" feels like such bull. Plugging a prompt into a computer and sitting back and watching the words appear on screen is NOT writing a novel. It's letting a computer use OTHER people's work to write something FOR YOU. Which is a whole other can of worms. I get that not everybody can sit and write a novel, but saying that those people should be allowed to not do any of the work besides plugging in a prompt and adding their name at the end when other people are putting in the actual work is infuriating.

All the youngsters I see saying they can't write without an app and Grammar Bot 5000 irritate me too.

I started fleshing out an idea a few days ago by literally putting pen to paper and I've spent half the time just trying to get the cadence right. It's like playing a long game of the 'sorry if you heard this in their voice meme'.
